I love food and I love sugar…yes, I said it. But wanting sugar does not have to turn into a dietary misstep or a binge. There are many secrets I’ll discuss to fight and prevent sugar cravings. This week I’ll focus on the cheapest and easiest and that is to begin the day with drinking something sour. Drinking something sour seems to immediately decrease hunger which makes it much easier to make better food choices.
There are many sour and even bitter options that can work to decrease cravings. I tend to use apple cider vinegar or lemon juice mixed into water because those are available in almost every kitchen. But you can use herbal bitters or live fermented beverages like kombucha, Kevita or kefir in which the sugar has been used up during fermentation, leaving behind a bitter taste and lots of beneficial bacteria to support digestion and a healthy metabolism.
These sour foods should be consumed before eating food because their effect is to leave you satisfied while eating less. I have grown to enjoy them and tend to incorporate them into my day like someone would drink coffee or soda. Here is my favorite sweet and sour drink for craving control. The recipe based on a familiar recipe online called “good girl moonshine”.
- Quart size mason jar of ice
- Add the juice of one lemon
- 1 Tablespoon organic apple cider vinegar
- 1 scoop Berry Barleans Greens powder (optional but adds a little sweetness)
- During the holidays, I add a spoonful of fresh cranberries (optional)
- Fill the jar with filtered water and add in the lemon that was squeezed for the juice.
- Stir with a straw and then sip and enjoy drinking it with a straw so the acidic nature of the liquid is not on your teeth.
- Eat the sour cranberries when you reach the bottom of the drink
