The Federal Government Just Launched Its Most Ambitious Lyme Disease Effort Yet. Here’s What It Means for Patients.

In May 2026, HHS announced its most ambitious Lyme disease initiative yet, funding tick control, faster diagnostics, and new research into tick-related conditions. Several parts of that plan are still actively unfolding through this summer, which means the news is still relevant if you or someone you love has spent years chasing answers for persistent symptoms after a tick bite.

Why this is a turning point

Lyme disease is one of the fastest-growing vector-borne health threats in the country. More than 476,000 Americans are diagnosed each year, and recent data show emergency room visits for tick bites hit their highest springtime level in nearly a decade. 

 

HHS set a clear target: cut Lyme disease cases by 25 percent by 2035, measured against 2022 levels. To get there, the agency is funding research, prevention, and faster diagnosis on several fronts at once. 

What the plan includes

The announcement covers four main efforts: 

 

A tick-control pilot program. Led by the CDC and HHS alongside leading researchers, this multi-million-dollar program aims to target and eliminate ticks on wildlife before they reach humans. The work starts with the New England Center of Excellence in Vector-Borne Diseases and builds on community collaboration, including the Indian Health Service and the Wampanoag Tribe in Massachusetts. 

 

Innovation challenges. HHS rolled out three new LymeX challenges with up to $2.5 million in total prize funding, aimed at public awareness, frontline treatment ideas, and using AI to help patients with Lyme and other invisible illnesses get answers faster. The Healthathon portion of that effort is still taking submissions through August 7, 2026, so this isn’t a closed chapter — it’s actively developing. 

 

Alpha-gal syndrome research. NIH is funding new work on Alpha-gal syndrome, a tick-associated condition that can trigger serious allergic reactions to red meat and other mammalian products. CDC estimates nearly 500,000 Americans live with it, and emerging evidence suggests the real number may be higher. 

 

A renewed focus on experienced care. HHS underscored the importance of connecting patients with providers who specialize in Lyme disease and associated chronic conditions. It is a clear acknowledgment that complex, lingering cases call for clinicians who treat them often, not occasionally. 

 

HHS also continues to back research at scale, with NIH investing nearly $50 million a year in Lyme disease research and about $122 million a year across broader tick-borne disease work. 

The diagnosis problem
