A result of nerve damage or dysfunction in the peripheral nervous system, neuropathy causes weakness, numbness, and pain, usually in your hands and feet. It can also affect other areas of your body.

Your peripheral nervous system is the network of nerves outside your brain and spinal cord. Your brain and spinal cord make up your central nervous system. When nerve cells, called neurons, within your peripheral nervous system are damaged or destroyed, there is a disruption in the way the neurons communicate with each other and with the brain. This is what leads to the pain and weakness.
