Periodic cleanses can be helpful to keep the body healthy but daily continuous detoxification is necessary to stay healthy. Did you know that your body has four detox organs that work daily for you? But how well are they actually working?
Skin: The skin is the largest detox organ and your sweat takes toxins out of the body, especially organic chemicals and the toxic metal cadmium from cigarette smoke exposure. If you do not sweat, you have a detox problem; you may be dehydrated or you may have mineral depletion. To detoxify the skin try dry skin brushing, sweating frequently, or (low EMF) infrared sauna therapy.
Kidneys: Your kidneys also work to detoxify your body. They need to work well in order to remove chemicals and heavy metals from the body. Alkalizing the urine periodically can increase the excretion of both. This can be done easily by mixing one teaspoon of baking soda with 8 ounces of water and drinking the mixture occasionally. Baking soda only alkalinizes the urine and not the body as some believe. Our blood pH stays constant a 7.35-7.45. The best way to improve your body’s pH is to replete the necessary minerals and to eliminate toxins.
Your kidneys also work hard to replenish minerals. This is important because minerals are needed as cofactor for enzymes. They are also needed to displace heavy metals that maybe inhibiting enzymes and blocking metabolic processes. Anything that increases the pH of the stomach like alkaline water, antacids, proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec and Nexium will decrease mineral absorption so avoid these if you can. Only use the baking soda occasionally and not daily. We are designed to have a stomach pH of 2 (very acidic) in order to assimilate minerals and B12, activate digestive enzymes and digest protein.
Another way to enhance your kidney’s ability to detoxify is using purified water and minerals. These are needed daily. I recommend drinking half of your body weight (pounds) in ounces as the daily amount of water needed to detox through the kidneys and skin. Use filtered (reverse osmosis) or ozonated water at half your body weight (lbs) in ounces of water per day. Eating alkaline foods that are listed on the alkaline diet is the best way to get your required minerals. A urine pH between 6.4 and 7 is recommended (measured on days that you are not taking the baking soda).
