About Diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that results in higher levels of glucose in the bloodstream. The cause of increased blood sugar levels is defined by the different types of diabetes. The two most common forms of diabetes are Type 1 and Type 2.

Type 1 diabetes is a disorder of no insulin production. Insulin is the hormone in our body that moves glucose from our blood into our cells to help with energy production.

Type 2 diabetes is a disorder of insulin resistance. There is typically enough insulin present, however, the cells have a hard time using the insulin to accept the glucose. Thus glucose gets trapped in the bloodstream, causing the levels to increase overall.

The goal of diabetes management is to aim to keep the blood glucose level at a steady-state that isn’t too high or too low. High glucose levels over an extended period of time can cause long-term health problems in many organ systems. Low glucose levels even for a short period of time can cause the body to go into alert because there isn’t enough glucose to produce energy.

The most effective way to balance blood glucose levels is to optimize nutrition, movement, sleep quality, stress perception, and community support. Balanced blood glucose levels not only improve physical health but also contribute to an improved sense of wellbeing and increased quality of life in the moment.
