John L. Wilson, Jr., MD, FAAFP

Dr. Wilson received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota. He served as clinical associate professor at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine and the University of Minnesota-Duluth School of Medicine. He joined the Medical Center in 1991 following 14 years in rural family practice in Minnesota.

Dr. Wilson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM), as well as past president of AAEM where he also served as Continuing Medical Education (CME) Chairman for five years. Dr. Wilson was the recipient of the AAEM’s Jonathan Foreman Award for outstanding effort in promoting environmental medicine. He was also presented the Gary Strong award by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) for outstanding service and dedication to IAOMT. He served on the Board of Directors of the IAOMT from 2005 through 2014. He has lectured nationally and has an interest in medical politics. Dr. Wilson has extensive training in Environmental Medicine, Clinical Metal Toxicology, and Neural Therapy.

Dr. Wilson is a founding member, board member and past president of the North Carolina Integrative Medical Society (NCIMS), the only such state-based organization of its kind. In addition, he has served as past president of the International College of Integrative Medicine.

Dr. Wilson values old-fashioned aspects of the practice of medicine that increase patient and practitioner satisfaction alike, including longer appointment times to get to know his patients, listening, and comprehensive physical exams as well as the use of humor and a relaxed setting.

He is married and has two grown sons. He enjoys people, spending time with his wife, bluegrass music, getting man-time on his tractor taking care of neighborhood roads and keeping current on innovative medical advances that honor his guiding philosophy: “Biology first, pharmacology second.”
