Did you know that many common candies given at Halloween contain harmful ingredients like corn syrup, artificial flavors, artificial coloring, emulsifiers, rancid fats, and more? Unfortunately many of these ingredients are linked to mood changes, hyperactivity, some cancers, and even heart disease. Luckily you can make your own sweet treats at home to have a healthy happy Halloween for adults and children alike!
Howling Ghosts (pictured above)
Yields 10 pieces
10 organic ripe bananas
7 ounces dairy-free chocolate (such as Enjoy Life or Lakanto)
2 tsp coconut oil
Melt chocolate in a double broiler or in microwave-safe glass bowl set on top of a pot of boiling water. Make sure chocolate does not burn. Set aside to cool slightly.
Cut bananas in half and then cut small jagged points (see photo). Take a small spoon and carefully “draw” ovals on the ghosts (for the mouths). Using a toothpick, carefully “draw” dots for eyes (see photo). Allow to chocolate to set, and enjoy!
Creepy Apple Smilers (pictured above)
Yields 8 apple bites
2 organic green apples, quartered
Organic creamy sunflower butter, almond butter, or cashew butter
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
2-3 organic strawberries, sliced
16 googley eyes (available at most crafts stores)
Cut vertical lines out of each green apple quarter to create a “mouth” (see photo). Fill the inside with nut butter and one slice of strawberry (see photo). Line the inside of the apple quarters with sunflower seed “teeth.” Using a toothpick, dot the apple slices with a bit of nut butter to stick; place googley eyes on the slices.
Make sure to tell little ones the eyes are not edible. Enjoy!
